Schlossinsel Hamburg Harburg
The design contains a new animated quarter on the water’s edge. The main character is the conjunction to the centre of Harburg. The existing axis which is orientated through the middle and along the new campus is continued to the Isle. The Isle is surrounded by a green belt which offers possibilities for leisure activities. Next to the two main sides of the Isle is a lattice-like structure which forms the framework for a flexible urban grid. They build a trapezoid space which forms a green junction between these two grids.
Since the beginning urban development has been conditioned by grid structures. This universal standard scheme – as a kind of normative system - can be projected onto every area - geographic, historic and cultural. A lower development of heights between four and five floors creates a smooth structure which counterbalances the opposite side and strengthens the urban character of the Palace Isle. The impression of compact development is also strengthened by boardwalks and bridges which connect buildings.
The green belt which frames the Isle is connected by a pedestrian bridge. On one side it functions as a path on the other side as a beach. The habitation development has a strong relation to the water. The stepping up of building height from the harbour offers many private rooftop accesses. Different heights allow different forms of habitation and mediate between the height of existing buildings and the height limit of 18 m orientated to the Palace. The park has a definite outline and counterbalances to the stony decking of the habitation area. Due to the location of the buildings at the waterside the spaces between them are only used by the inhabitants – therefore they function as ‚private’ public spaces and form part of the ensemble.
Through different designs and building boarder definitions the typology receives a dynamic character. For example different slopes orientated towards the waterside. |
